Manifesto Of The Communist Party By Marx, Engles

The Manifesto of the Communist Party is an 1848 political pamphlet written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Commissioned by the Communist League, it became one of the most influential political documents in history, analyzing the class struggle and the problems with capitalism. While the original text was completed in 1848 and cannot be updated, it is continuously republished and reinterpreted. For example, recent editions have focused on accessibility, like dyslexia-friendly formatting, or new contextual analysis.

Key concepts of the Manifesto

  • Class struggle: Marx and Engels argue that the history of all societies is a history of class struggles. They trace this struggle from ancient Rome through the feudal system and into modern capitalist society, which they saw as being divided between two primary classes: the bourgeoisie (the capitalist class) and the proletariat (the working class).
  • The bourgeoisie and the proletariat: The bourgeoisie emerged from the ruins of feudal society and, through the pursuit of profit, revolutionized production and created a global market. However, in doing so, they also created the proletariat, a class of wage laborers who are exploited by the capitalists.
  • Inevitable revolution: According to Marx and Engels, capitalism contains the seeds of its own destruction. As the bourgeoisie accumulates wealth and power, the conditions of the proletariat worsen, eventually leading to a revolution that will overthrow the capitalist system and establish a classless, communist society.
  • Goals of the communists: The manifesto outlines the immediate goals of the communists, which include the formation of the proletariat into a class, the overthrow of bourgeois supremacy, and the conquest of political power by the proletariat.
  • Policy proposals: The manifesto lists a series of transitional measures to be implemented following the revolution. These include the abolition of private property in land, a heavy progressive income tax, the abolition of inheritance, and free public education.
  • The concluding call to arms: The document famously concludes with a rallying cry for the international working class: “Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains”.

Why the Manifesto remains relevant

Although written in the 19th century, the Manifesto is still widely studied today for several reasons:

  • Critique of capitalism: Many scholars and activists continue to find its critique of capitalism’s inherent inequality and exploitative nature relevant to contemporary issues of wealth concentration and global economics.
  • Influence on social movements: The text has had a profound impact on socialist and communist movements throughout history and continues to inspire debate and discussion about social justice, economic systems, and workers’ rights.
  • Enduring philosophical questions: It raises timeless philosophical questions about the nature of society, power, and human progress, making it a foundational text in political theory and sociology.
